Mario dreams that he's in a strange new world called Sub Con with Luigi, Toad and the Princess. The land has been taken over by a monster named Wart, and only Mario and his friends can save it.
This game was originally called Doki Doki Panic in Japan and had nothing to do with the Mario games, but Nintendo of America felt that the actual Super Mario Bros. 2 (released here as "The Lost Levels" a few years later) was too hard and too similar to the original for North American tastes, so they converted Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game instead.
Super Mario Bros. 2 was the first game to allow players to control the Princess and Toad. Instead of stomping monsters, players could pick them up and throw them, or pull vegetables out of the ground to use as weapons.
