BACKGROUND:
The Cosmic Spirit is a projection from Rosalina made of cosmic energy. If Mario failed too often on his journey to stop Bowser from taking over the Power Stars, she could appear and ask if he needed any help. If he accepted she would posseses him and takes him through the level.
Unfortunately, when Mario was in this possessed state, the Power Star became tarnished and became a Bronze Star.
